Walter "Chuck" Attwood McEwen

1940-2023

Walter "Chuck" Attwood McEwen

Suddenly, at his "happy place" cottage in Cascumpec with his wife and two dear friends by his side, the death occured of Walter McEwen, of Cornwall and formerly of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, age 83 years old.

Walter was born and grew up in Montague, Prince Edward Island.  After graduating high school in Montague, he attended Saint Dunstan's University in Charlottetown where he received a BSc., followed by Dalhousie University in Halifax, where he studied law. After being admitted to the Ontario Bar Association and residing for a brief time in Toronto with his new wife Myrna and two young sons, he and his young family returned to Prince Edward Island in 1973 and he set up to practice law with Cambell McEwen Taylor McLellan law firm in Summerside. He was later named Queen's Counsel in 1986. Always interested in politcs, Walter served in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1989 to 1996, at times on the province's Executive Council as Minister of Provincial Affairs, Attorney General and Minister of Health and Social Services. After he retired from politics, he returned to the practice of law and also served as a member of the National Parole Board of Canada. In addition to his long professional career, Walter could often be found donating his time working to serve his community.

He enjoyed playing bridge, cribbage, golfing and hockey. But his passion was fly fishing on the Island and especially on the Miramachi River in New Brunswick. Walter was and always will be remembered as a dear friend by all who know him, and in particular for his great wit and sense of humor.

Walter was predeceased by his parents; Francis (Ted) McEwen and Mary (Burke) McEwen, his sister Mary and brothers Alfred (Teddy) and Sandy.  Walter was a loving husband and is survived by his faithful wife Myrna (Nicholson) McEwen.  He was a  loving father of Scott, Shawn and James (Alyson) McEwen and very proud grandfather of Erin Paige, Bryson, Breagh, Anna and Clara (aka the Goofesses).  Walter is lovingly remembered by his sister Agnes McEwen and nieces and nephews; Penni, Andrea, Sandy, Chris, Brent and Terry.
