Jean Marie Doherty (nee McGaugh)

1956-2021

Jean Marie Doherty (nee McGaugh)

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Jean Marie Doherty (nee McGaugh) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on May 3, 2021, age 64 years. The most devoted wife to Bill and mother to Jeff (Katie Rossiter), Robbie (Jill) and Haley (Jacob Howard). Beloved sister to Donna (Brian Waddell) and Fabian (Sandy Pratt), and sister-in-law to Patsy (David Smith) and Bobby (Joanne). Special Auntie and Great-Auntie to her nieces and nephews, treasured cousin, and valued friend. An honourary Mom to many. Jean is survived by step mother-in-law Audrey Doherty, and is predeceased by parents Martin and Joan McGaugh and parents-in-law Ivan and Lois Doherty.

Jean was born in Souris, PEI and grew up in Charlottetown. A proud graduate of Saint Mary’s University, Jean was known professionally as an effective and strategic communicator whose career with the provincial government was dedicated to improving health, literacy and education. One of her proudest professional accomplishments came early in her working life when she was instrumental in launching the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation, an organization that continues to impact the well being of Islanders today.

Jean was at her best when tending to her flowers in Stanhope, laughing with her family around the dinner table and catching up with friends over lunch. She will be fondly remembered for her gentle demeanor, bringing peace and calmness to every situation she faced. Jean had a special way of seeing and bringing out the best in others; her listening ears will be sorely missed by many.

The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to Dr. Keith Baglole and to the Unit 1 and 8 nursing teams at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for their tremendous care and thoughtfulness.

Resting at the Hennessey Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home. Due to current restrictions, only a funeral mass (by invitation only) will be held at the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer with interment in the York United Cemetery.

In lieu of sending flowers, we encourage you to plant your own in memory of Jean with hopes they bring you the same special joy and pleasure as they did for her. If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation or to the PEI Literacy Alliance. Online condolences may be made at www.islandowned.ca.
