Thomas Joseph Moore Jr.

1930-2017

Thomas Joseph Moore Jr.

With family gathered around him in Charlottetown, Thomas J. Moore Jr., aged 86, went to God on Friday, June 9, 2017.

Born November 8th, 1930, Dad was educated in Halifax, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s University at the precocious age of 19.  In the late 1950s, he graduated from the then-new Masters of Social Work Program at the Maritime School of Social Work.

In 1955, Tom married Teresa (Best) of Kentville, and the next 52 years traced the arc of a love story that prevailed over many struggles and heartaches. There were many smiles of satisfaction over triumphs large and small, and not a few shared laughs—as much about their own foibles as those of others.

Dad worked as a social worker (Mom, when growing family permitted, as a registered nurse) in Halifax and in Peterborough, Ontario, before returning to the Maritime School of Social Work as an instructor in 1966. In 1970, he and Mom, now with six children in tow, moved to Charlottetown, where Dad took the position of Director of the Protestant Family Services Bureau.

Tragedy struck in 1972 with a car accident that claimed the life of his own father, Thomas Sr., and left Dad seriously injured. Years of recovery followed, culminating in his obtaining a position with the Department of Veterans Affairs, an opportunity for which he and Mom were always grateful.

Dad was predeceased by his father, Thomas J. Moore Sr.; mother Mary; sister Thérèse Moore, sc; brother Jim (Eleanor); and Dad’s lifemate, heartmate—and now new soulmate—Teresa Maria.

He is survived by his sister Sheila Moore, sc; and children Paul (Mary Louise); John (Dawna); Michael; Jim; Pat (Antonieta); and Mary Sarah Moore Clark (John). Grandchildren are Sarah, Peter, Louis, Anna, and namesake Thomas.

Gratitude is owed to the kind, professional staff at Andrew’s Lodge, Malpeque Road, and Unit 2, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and for the wonderful blessing of the PEI Palliative Care Centre in Charlottetown. As well, thanks to Dr. Lantz, longtime physician to Mom and Dad.

A funeral mass will be offered at St. Pius X Church, Charlottetown on Monday, June 12th at 10:00 a.m.. Online condolences may be offered through Hennessey Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home at www.islandowned.ca. In lieu of flowers, a donation could  be made to the PEI Palliative Care Centre.
