Mrs. Kathryn H. "Kay" Upstone

1925-2015

Mrs. Kathryn H. "Kay" Upstone

Peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown on November 1, 2015 of Kathryn "Kay" Helena Upstone (nee MacDonald), aged 90 years. Beloved wife of the late Gordon John Upstone and dear mother to Brenda Margaret Gaudet of Halifax and Mary Ada Upstone of Charlottetown. Mother-in-law to Ronald Gaudet and Brian Milburn. Kathryn was predeceased by her parents Mary Loretta MacDonald (nee MacInnis) and Paul Francis MacDonald of Souris, P.E.I. and her sister, Margaret MacLean also of Souris.

Kathryn was born in Saint Catherine’s, P.E.I. on May 4, 1925 and moved to Souris with her family at a young age. She attended Souris Convent and graduated from the Commercial Program at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown.

She moved to Moncton where she worked as a bookkeeper and met her future husband, RAF Warrant Officer First Class Gordon Upstone, who was in Canada training for his wartime duties as a navigator with RAF Bomber Command.

After the war she moved to Amersham, England where she married Gordon and worked in the accounting department at Goya Cosmetics. In 1953 the family relocated to PEI.

Kathryn loved all things Scottish. Her trips to Scotland and the highlands of Cape Breton were definite travel highlights. She and Gordon also made many trips to Florida, England, Spain, the Canary Islands, France, Belgium, and Andorra as well as various Canadian destinations including Saint-Ann-de-Beaupre Shrine in Quebec. She also enjoyed the time spent at the family cottage in Rocky Point, P.E.I.

Kathryn was an avid reader and mentor to The Old Boots Book Club. She enjoyed knitting and the family enjoyed many warm sweaters. She was a woman of great faith and participated in the Ladies' Prayer Group for a number of years as well as some friendly visiting at Beach Grove Home. She and Gordon were also involved in the P.E.I. Amateur Radio Association and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

"Auntie Kay" will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews: Earl Maclean (Donna MacAulay R.N.) of Cornwall, P.E.I., Diana Wade (Trevor), Elizabeth Newman (Chris), Robert Lehmann (Susie), and Stephen Upstone (Susie), all residing in England, and brother-in-law Ted Upstone of Spain. She will also be lovingly remembered by her twenty great nieces and nephews.

In her final days Kathryn and her family were much comforted by Donna and Earl, her great niece Holly Morrison R.N. and husband Steve, and great nephew Craig. Kathryn's cousin, Mervin MacInnis and Brenda's sister-in-law, Linda Gaudet also provided welcome support.
